We find the etymological origins of two key terms in the title of this article, “political” and “philosophy”, in ancient Greek: the former originally pertaining to the polis or city-state; the latter being the practice of a particular kind of inquiry conceived literally as the “love of wisdom” (philosophia). Yet politi-cal philosophers have tended to tackle this subject in two quite diffferent ways, depending on how they position themselves with regard to the domain of morality. First published in 1976, Contemporary Political Philosophers is a survey, by scholars from both sides of the Atlantic, of the main developments of twentieth-century political philosophy. Modern political philosophers, however, found that they needed to rethink politics according to a new, more realistic understanding of the way humans actually behave.
